THE MEMORY
So this is a montage memory spanning about six months to a year, soon after Jay was abandoned by Solon. Canon doesn't have a whole lot to say about this period of time, but the otters do go a little bit into it during Jay's CQ.
Norma: So you rescued him and wound up living together?
Quppo: At first, he didn't speak at all.
Pippo: He showed little emotion and his expression never changed.
Poppo: He never smiled.
Norma: Yeah, well, he was still pretty unsociable when we first met him.
Quppo: As time went on, he gradually grew more cheerful.
Pippo: His face is so much brighter now.
Poppo: Especially when he's with you all, he smiles like he's really having fun.
Obviously the last bit refers to events during the game, but!
In a nutshell: this is bitty Jay, not too long after having his entire world and reason for existence cut out from under him, believing himself inherently worthless, being gradually coaxed out of his shell by a bunch of insistently cheerful anthropomorphic otters--starting to live, starting to want to and accept wanting to, maybe learning a few things about what love looks like in a non-abusive context.
(That last is sort of fuzzy, though.)
WHAT HE LEARNS
+ oh well . . . that's why I'm so attached to these otters . . . .
--no, seriously, though, this is a lot of context for his previous terrible childhood memory, filling in a few gaps, and the hole of What Happened To Bring This Attitude On is becoming increasingly apparent. At this point he can make a pretty good guess that he failed at being a ninja at some point, was left behind or abandoned as a consequence, and ended up hanging with otters. And he knows he used to work for Solon! So he's got most of his pre-game history.
Just not. The one bit that's going to seriously wreck him.
EFFECTS
This is a sig pos in canon but is going to have more of an ambivalent effect here, since Swift (like Jay before him!) hates his past self and regards him as weak, worthless, etc. He doesn't like being reminded of the whole 'wanted to die a little' thing! But he will mostly push it down and keep going.
