[ for a meeting with a stranger he'd like to be on good terms with, he pulls out all of his noble training—good posture, head held high, maybe not a cordial expression but at least not an upset one. ]
Pardon the intrusion. My name is Jusis Albarea. I was told by Vern to seek out an individual named Jay. Is he available?
[ weird conversation to have out in the open, but the building is, as far as he can tell, basically nothing but coven anyway. he returns an equally small smile. ]
Likewise. I expressed interest in an organization of coven members who were displeased with the circumstances when he told me you had already arranged something of the sort, and I should meet with you.
[ jusis will glance in the direction jay cranes his neck in. he doesn't have a good enough grasp on the atmosphere of the coven to guess at the exact reason, but considering the whole thing doesn't seem to be well-publicized in the first place, he considers it a solid sign of inner dissent. good sign.
in any case— ]
I think that would be for the best. I get the impression you haven't been openly advertising for a reason.
[ maybe just a lack of time, but every resistance has its precautions. ]
[He smiles slightly, and shuts the door behind them.]
Just to keep things from getting back to Brie or Genette. We haven't done much other than compile some lists of questions for Qri--which is something I ought to get back to, if Shehui will stop interfering with us for a few days--but that could always change, of course.
How much do you know about our dealings with Qri since she first started bringing us here?
[ he crosses his arms, thinking. there are a lot of bits and pieces that he's learned, but he's lacking a good grasp on the history of the coven as a whole. ]
Not enough. [ if he's speaking frankly. more seriously ... ]
Obviously, I know she deigned to summon us so we would harvest magical energy for her, and I learned that the coven held onto a part of that energy when they last found it. [ clever. ] I've also heard she's been missing for over a month, though she somehow still graced me with her summons.
[He pulls a small notebook out of his clothes, and flips through the pages until he's found what he's looking for--a piece of folded paper.]
This might be of interest to you. It's a short summary of what we know about the situation with us and Qri. I passed it around at our last meeting a couple months ago.
[So it's somewhat out of date.]
The coven as a whole hasn't been able to agree on how to approach Qri's demands. In Aimintas, a number of us proposed withholding the source of energy Qri wanted us to collect in exchange for information, but not everyone agreed, and we weren't able to unify in time. That's part of what the group I formed in the wake of that is for: we may not comprise the entire coven, but there are enough of us to take more drastic action if we deem it necessary.
[ this is about what he hoped for from a meeting with the rebel leader: a concise way to share information, a clear purpose for action. he skims the paper offered to him and nods when he's finished.
it gives him a better idea of why vern and geir did what they did, too, even if that's still frustrating. ]
Were you aware of the plan Vern and Geir set into motion beforehand? Their purpose was the same, and Vern is clearly aware of your group.
[ he suspects it's a no, but he'd like to make sure. strange to be aware of people with the same interests as yourself and not work with them. ]
. . . honestly, I'd been thinking about planning a break-in. One of their government buildings--we need information more than anything. Now I think it might attract a little too much attention, but--
[He shrugs, as if breaking into buildings was something he did on the regular.]
--well, it's something to consider once things have settled down. If it was done correctly, no one would have to know we were there at all.
[ under normal circumstances, that would concern him, but it's hard to be a law-abiding citizen when the government unnecessarily has it out for you. it's a safer plan than the bones were, and that's what matters. ]
That sounds like a more reasonable course of action than blowing up part of a park, at least. [ a pause. ] They took precautions to avoid harming the citizens and to cause minimal property damage, but I would explore avenues where those precautions wouldn't be necessary first. A stealth operation to acquire information, if possible, would be more in line with my expectations.
[ jusis' priorities are not flexible here, and he'd like to mention them upfront. ]
You say it as if there wasn't time to make a plan and move before Geir and Vern did. If it were an emergency, I would agree, but it sounds like you had ample time to come up with something.
Vern mentioned he thought you were having trouble meeting.
[ if there were outstanding issues, he'd like to hear about them before he gets into criticism, at least. ]
I may have been being too cautious. I've been working alone, trying to gather information on the surveillance and defenses used in this city--I've been reluctant to hold meetings too much, because we don't know the extent to which we're being monitored. The government does seem to have an extraordinary amount of control over this building.
[Also, you know, the mun died for like a month, but.]
So I've heard. [ none too happy about lockdowns, either. ] I was concerned about the level of surveillance myself, but Vern hasn't been taken into custody yet, so they're either incapable of acting or not listening.
[ he doesn't think the monitors are going to go after the dragon. he's going to be wrong. ]
With that in mind, I would ask if you plan on calling a meeting any time soon.
I think a large meeting would probably be more noticeable than just Vern and Geir planning among themselves. But I do want to try and set something up--something to discuss this situation in Shehui, if nothing else.
If it were conspicuous enough, it could be. Without a more suitable location, the complex we all presently live in can hardly be considered a suspicious meeting place.
[ beyond how suspicious it already is that they're all in the same building, anyway. ]
Location aside, I think it would be wise to address the situation before any other loose cannons go off, yes. I hope it goes without saying I'd like to be included in future discussions as well.
