MEMORY

SO THIS MEMORY BEGINS AT AN EMOTIONAL LOW IN JAY'S LIFE, which I could summarize but none of that makes it in here so essentially, Jay made his life balls and from where he stands there is nothing but balls from here on forth. Wall to wall balls.

No, okay, the memory picks up just as Solon [CREEPY OLD GUY] is going to hit him, and is stopped by . . . anthropomorphic otters?

Quppo: It's about time you stopped laughing!
Pippo: Jay's family is right here!
Poppo: That's right! We're his family!
Quppo, Pippo, Poppo: And we won't forgive you for hurting one of our own!

Jay is understandably shocked. The Oresoren reveal that all of them, the entire village, have come to rescue him--Solon motions for some of his minions, except no, all of the ninja have been dispatched by otters. Poppo unties Shirley, and they tell her to grab Jay and run while they fend off Solon. Which she does, but not before . . . grabbing a leaf?

Once they've gotten away a little, Jay protests that he has to go back, because he has to protect the Oresoren. He is pretty desperate! Shirley . . . well, I will paste the entirety of her speech, because it's all important, and it's a great moment:

Shirley: Get a hold of yourself! Surely you realize by now how strong the Oresoren are. They may not be powerful warriors, but their hearts are very strong. Much stronger than yours.
Jay: I thought of myself as the guardian of the Oresoren. But...But maybe it was I who was being guarded. Protected.
Shirley: They have the strength in their hearts to stand up to danger and protect what's important to them. The true strength to stand up to something, even if it means sacrifice. Your heart is very weak. But while your heart may be weak, you certainly have the strength to defeat your enemies.
Jay: The strength to defeat enemies...
Shirley: That's something the Oresoren don't have. Nobody has everything. That's why we reach out to each other. That's why we work together and help each other!
Jay: But I...don't have anyone to reach out to.
Shirley: Do you really believe that? Have you ever thought about what everyone would think if they heard you say that? They've all been concerned about you. They've all reached out to you. Senel and Moses, too, they've all been worried about you. How can you just brush them aside and say something like that?
Jay: But...But I...
Shirley: Trusting in people is very difficult. But you have to have courage and take the first step! You have to be honest about your feelings! You say you want people to reach out to, but you don't want to get hurt. That's just selfish.
Jay: Selfish?
Shirley: You might get hurt, but you have to have the courage to move forward. Because just waiting won't change anything. Before I understood that, I was a great burden to everyone. I stopped trusting the Orerines. I stopped trusting Senel. I closed myself up in a shell. That's exactly why I understand everyone's feelings. You have to look forward. You have to look everyone in the eyes. You have to face them. I'm going back to the others. Because I need their help. Because we need everyone's help to save the Oresoren!
Jay: I...I...
Shirley: Decide for yourself.
Jay: I want to protect the Oresoren!
Jay: Now...I need everyone's help.
Shirley: Let's go back to the others.
Jay: Okay!

The memory ends there.

WHAT HE LEARNS
+ what the balls
+ no seriously what
+ I . . . loved those anthropomorphic otters and they were my family I guess? And also badass?
+ okay no I can't do this in bullet form

I AM RULING THAT JAY DOES NOT REMEMBER HIS ROLE IN SHIRLEY'S KIDNAPPING because, well, it's more interesting to feed him his former mindset slowly. He will wonder why Shirley is tied up and he is not! And then he will shut down that line of thought because--considering this memory is also his first exposure to SOLONFEELS, aka a tangle of terror, helplessness, bitterness, and bowing to inevitability, there is nowhere good for that to go. This will also just increase his suspicion of NINJA which I am sad I have not gotten to play with yet.

He will gather that he was sort of Solon's pawn or toy, that this has something to do with his ninja past which he already heavily suspected, and that he had to be rescued. None of that is very comfortable.

EFFECTS

. . . hard to say! I will probably attempt to onscreen this (not in the cabin, thx Erika) because there's just so much. It is full of feelings he will not want to acknowledge--that he would prefer to shove aside! But it is also full of nope.jpg GOD YOU SUCK don't push aside your own weakness :|a. It will sober him a lot, because he was honestly kind of getting holier-than-thou. God, having to acknowledge your own flaws is awful.

It will also make him look very differently at a couple of his relationships, but the list of people a) Jay was more than surfacely close to and b) who can said to have "inner strength" is pretty short, and at least one of them just got Booked, so! Maybe more of a sleeper effect in that regard.
