MEMORY



In which Jay the Unseen is a charmer.

The memory starts with the whole gang assembled at Will's house, where Jay announces that he's located Giet, Moses' pet galf whom the party is trying to bring back from his bout of ~darkness~. He's back at Moses' old lair.

Jay: Considering the danger involved, I haven't investigated inside the hideout.
Moses: Just knowing the place is enough. Thanks, Jay.
Jay: What did I tell you about that? You're really making me ill.
Moses: Hey!
Norma: Okay, okay, that's enough playing around.

Gracious, too.

There's a lot of worry here (gee, really), pasted over and generally repressed the fuck out of, but still extant. The party heads out to the bandits' old lair.

Moses: No doubt about it. Giet's here.
Jay: Of course he is. The information came from me, remember? Unlike you, I don't make mistakes.
Moses: Oh, of course! We all know you're always right, Jay! You can't be nothin' but perfect! I mean...you're Jay!
Jay: You're making fun of me now, aren't you?
Moses: What, you can't tell? Maybe you're not so smart, after all.
Chloe: I can't tell if they're getting along or not...
Norma: Oh, well, does it matter? It sounds like they're having fun to me!
Grune: It's so nice to see good friends having fun together. Can I join in?
Will: Enough playing around. Let's get moving.
Jay: I'm not playing around...
Moses: Yeah, he's bein' played! Hah hah!
Jay: (And here I was worrying about you...)
Moses: You just say something?
Jay: No!

The party makes their way through the Bandit's Lair! Blah blah dungeon blah blah fighting blah blah. (I think this is Jay's first definite memory of fighting, as a note to self.) Before they get to the end, Moses stops them and says that he's going to do his best to bring Giet back to himself, but if it doesn't work, he wants to be prepared for the worst. All beasts inevitably turn wild at some point! He desperately wants there to be a different way, but--he also has responsibility to them for bringing them along, and he's acknowledging that.

This is when the rest of the party cuts in, telling him not to give up until the very end, and that Giet is their family too--they want to do their best to bring him back, as well.

Jay: I know you're stupid, but I hope you can at least understand that much.
Moses: You just can't keep quiet, can you? I swear...

. . . I just really love this dialogue. Anyway, the party enters Moses' old room and comes upon Giet, who's apparently been hurting himself in an attempt to not fight Moses. Moses comes closer, but ominous black mist (which the party by this point recognizes as a MENACE that kills plants makes monsters stronger causes DESPAIR etc. etc.) begins to seep out of Giet, taking the shape of ~Shadow Moses~! Boss battle ensues.

After the battle is over, they discuss the black mist some more--at this point it's beginning to look more like a concerted effort than anything else--and whether it might be the work of a being "like Nerifes" (in other words, a god.) Grune's head starts acting up, and she (apparently) starts talking to the air.

The air, in this case, is "very lively" and goes by Gnome.

After that interlude of babbling slash foreshadowing, Moses announces that he can't go back with Giet! Giet is going to turn wild sooner or later--he might already be starting, point of fact--and they should have their fight to the death while they're both still lucid, before Giet becomes dangerous to other people. There is crying! Screaming! Dramatic proclamations! And then:

Norma: Um, I'm awfully sorry to interrupt when you're all excited and stuff but...
Moses: What do you want, Bubbles?!
Jay: I apologize for disturbing the proceedings. We have a suggestion. Could we ask you to listen to it?
Moses: A suggestion?...
Jay: How about letting Giet live in the Quiet Lands?
Norma: There's nobody there, right? And it's big enough, too. Um, of course you guys thought of that, too, right?
Jay: It's far too prominent a place for you to have forgotten.
Norma: Just now, the fighting thing -- that was all a really...really...really...big joke. Wasn't it, Red? Though, I do seem to recall Senny and everybody screaming like little girls... Your performance was so realistic, it had me completely fooled. You all looked like you were about to cry.
Chloe: Okay, Norma, that's enough.
Norma: Well, I guess it doesn't matter since it was all such a superbly acted...joke.
Moses: Heh heh! Yeah, of course!
Jay: You're sweating an awful lot for a joke.
Norma: Man, oh man. You people!

Memory ends there.

WHAT HE LEARNS
+ Moses is a very irritating man.
+ He was a fighter! He also had glowy fingernail powers.
+ Some more context for his previous Moses & Giet memory, including why they had to abandon him to the Quiet Lands in the first place.
+ Black mist stuff! He will probably work out the connection between that and the "darkness"/Schwartz mentions once he has time to think about it--the speculation about higher beings is, in retrospect, a clue.
+ Speaking of: something about a "Nerifes"?
+ Grune is a lot flightier than she was in his previous memory, and she doesn't seem to remember anything about the darkness.
+ "Gnome"--might also see the connection here, given the mention in his last memory.
+ The darkness causes people to give into their worst natures!
+ I knew some pretty stupid people . . . .
+ Some more context for the funky looking Quiet Lands seen in the previous Moses memory--they're uninhabited, apparently.

He is definitely going to be watching this one twice. It is very fat.
