CHARACTER NAME: Jay
CANON & HISTORY: http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Tales_of_Legendia
http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Jay
AGE: 16
CANON POINT: mid-CQ, during his kidnapping of Shirley; specifically, a little before the scene where Solon taunts him with his Star Festival leaf
PERSONALITY:

We first meet Jay in the game as, essentially, the real-life equivalent of an internet troll: he badgers, questions, and generally tries to rile up our protagonist, all in the name of getting information out of him. "I can't stand it when there's something I don't know," he says. To find things out he starts a brawl (not involving him, oh, no) and a race, but he's clearly having fun with it: Jay likes toying with and having the advantage over people, as much as he's genuinely curious about what they're up to. He's a highly competent strategist and information-gatherer, but he tends to play with his food before he eats it, so to speak.

Nevertheless, Jay is more than capable of being Serious and Adult when the situation calls for it -- when he's serving as strategist for a major empire on the verge of war, or conducting reconnaissance on the protagonist's kidnapped sister. In this mode, in contrast to the trickster of the earlier game, he is serious, focused, and (mostly) polite -- well, up until he tricks the party into testing a dangerous submarine prototype for him, at least. Jay can be the childish, competitive player of games or the straightforwardly competent professional -- or both in alternating measure -- while still pursuing his own agenda. That isn't to say there's no truth to either of his faces: as the party gets to know him better, and we the audience begin to see Jay in the company of friends, what we get is someone who can be ruthlessly practical (he is, multiple times, the one advocating for the 'just kill them' option) and someone whose sense of humor often comes at the expense of others. (He gets a kick out of making one of the other party members -- Moses -- angry, in particular, but is polite and respectful with others.)

We also get a peek into someone who's -- well, very sixteen: who despite his hypercompetence and a wealth of life experience can be surprisingly thin-skinned (don't ask him about his height) and who struggles with his own emotions. A childhood of abuse and abandonment has left him with some very sharp-edged convictions about self-sacrifice and a reluctance to make himself vulnerable in front of other people. He clearly comes to care about the rest of his party, but tends to show this through, alternately, sideways remarks ("Do you think I'd travel with someone I didn't like?") and too-sharp taunting when he thinks one of them is doing something stupid. In Jay-speak it's easier to call someone pathetic than admit you're concerned about them.

He doesn't like talking about his past -- the details of his backstory are related to us by a third party -- but his feelings about it creep into his actions throughout the game. When he leads the party into a trap by telling them all they have to do is "risk their lives," or lights into a group of allies for throwing around those same words, the echoes of his years as a child assassin are apparent. Jay is not nearly as good at concealing his emotions as he would like you to believe. The early game gives us an impression of someone who likes to be in control -- someone who enjoys playing both the above-it manipulator and the voice of reason -- but at times, Jay will explode in fits of emotion. He rages at Moses when he thinks Moses is falling prey to his own cowardice; he breaks down twice when confronted with the possibility of losing those he loves. When his mentor and abuser reappears, he becomes at first agitated, and then withdrawn, denying everything and refusing to explain his actions -- but it's clear something is wrong. When he feels something strongly, it shows, whether he wants it to or not.

Perhaps for this reason he can be avoidant, disappearing and reappearing at times of his own choosing, remaining tight-lipped about his past and feelings. He affects an amoral, self-interested posture, and it's not that he's lying--Jay doesn't care much about what you do, unless it ends up on his own doorstep. But when he does care about something--or someone--he will go to great lengths to protect them. Over the course of the game, he faces down near-certain death, fights the literal ocean, and at one point almost walks away from his entire life in order to keep the people who matter to him safe.

POWERS:
  • Ninja illusions! He canonically has the ability to see through a few common ninja tricks--clones and concealment in particular--and may also be able to do those tricks himself, although I assume he's generally reluctant to rely on skills from his assassin days.

  • Eres. Eres are canonically the blessings of Nerifes, the ocean and the major deity of Legendia-world. In canon, they are used to power a lost civilization's technology (opening doors/gates, turning on elevators and trams), and characters also use their eres to banish a kind of Darkness-mist from the vicinity. An aura of light literally surrounds them and clears it away. Yes. (With sufficient resolve, of course.) They also form the basis of the characters' spells and special attacks! The version that the characters have is canonically pretty powerful--they, a party of eight, use it to help take down a god and turn back the end of the world. Jay is a hand-to-hand and dagger fighter with some small area-of-effect elemental spells--I'll avoid listing all the attacks he has and stick to general capabilities:
    • Elemental attacks (Pyre, Ice Storm/Wraith Ice, Brutal Earth/Wraith Earth, Merciless Thunder) - essentially, Jay sticks his dagger in the ground and bursts of fire, ice, earth, or lightning emanate from the ground immediately surrounding (I'd estimate about a wingspan's radius).

    • Exploding daggers (Dagger, Falcon) - essentially what it sounds like! Jay can throw a dagger and cause a small explosion. This does not, apparently, destroy the dagger.

    • Ill Wind - a move that creates "blades of air" that slash at the enemy.

    • Most of the rest of his moves are standard fighting-game moves--combinations of rapid kicks, flips, slashes, etc., or quick-cutting past an enemy. I assume that in this case, the eres lends additional power and force behind his blows (as well as, possibly, a further speed/dexterity boost), and will play as such.

OTHER: ors ors!

GAME INFO;

MAGIC ABILITY: The ability to project his emotions onto other people (requires physical touch).
PRICE: A leaf (from the Star Festival scene in canon) that reads, "I want a family."
ACCLIMATION: 8. Honestly, I'm taking him from the one point in canon where the coven is definitely better than what he's leaving behind. He won't like being imprisoned, but at the same time, he'll be somewhat resigned to it, because he's from a point where he really doesn't feel like he has agency over his own life--if anything, he'll have more trouble adjusting to what he did right before being brought to the coven.
