THE MEMORY
Headcanon! We have indications that Jay was working with Musette in some unofficial/informal capacity, such that he had an "arrangement" that enabled her to call on him to play strategist for her. And it's unlikely there were a lot of wars to strategize about in the six-ish years prior to the game . . . I'm assuming he fed some of his information to her, possibly also gathered specific deets on areas of her particular interest.
Of note, I'm also pretty sure that Jay's assassination mission had her as the target. So that's awkward, especially since--while I don't think Musette would have wanted to blackmail him or force his hand, her position of power over him as well as the fact that she has plenty of justification to put him away whenever she wants . . . well! I think it's impossible for him to avoid having felt a little squeezed by that. Mostly this is a pretty positive memory, though, spying on people, getting information, the thrill and excitement of that. And he's living! He's alive! He gets to choose things, and move about of his own free will (mostly), and . . . that's all a little new to him at the time of this memory.
