THE MEMORY

So background: Jay is an information dealer back home! A really, really good one. He's also ~super mysterious~~~

Senel: Is this Jay guy really that special?
Norma: Special isn't the word! They say he knows more than anyone about what's going on around the Legacy. But he's really cautious. Apparently, like, nobody has ever met him in person.
Senel: Then how do you get information from him?
Norma: You send him a letter in a certain way, and an answer comes back with the information you requested.
Senel: What a pain...

It's heavily implied that Jay relies on a network of Oresoren (adorable anthropomorphic otters) to deliver his messages and to scout for him. IN THIS PARTICULAR MEMORY, Jay gets a request from Will and Chloe asking about the whereabouts and motives of Vaclav, who's currently traipsing around the Legacy in search of Lost Ancient Technology. He prepares the information and makes plans, including (based on later events!) not only meeting them in person but taking them to the village where he and the otters live. This . . . is highly unusual! We are never told exactly why, but my guess is it has something to do with Will's standing as the sheriff of Werites Beacon, their common boss, and the fact that Jay, despite acting for all intents and purposes like a free agent, is in the service of one of Vaclav's enemies. So some vague thoughts about that!

He sends a note to the fountain plaza, and heads to the Legacy's port, Port-on-Rage, where he owns a boat. He then proceeds to pose as an innocent bystander (:'D):

Jay: Um...excuse me...
Will: Who are you?
Jay: I work on the docks. I have a letter for you...
Chloe: What does it say?
Will: Go to the lake that lies beyond Raging Bay.
Jay: I was performing some maintenance on a boat when I suddenly noticed a letter and some money sitting beside me. There were also instructions written on it to hand the letter to a couple walking nearby.
Will: And so you came to us.
Jay: Are you not the right couple?
Will: No, no, we are. This letter is for us.
Jay: Ah, great. Well then, good day.
Will: Hold on a second. You said you were performing maintenance on a small boat... Is it yours?
Jay: Well, yes, but...
Will: Could you take us to the other side of Raging Bay in that boat?

They head off! Shortly after, they're caught up to by Senel and Norma, who don't want to be left out of the action.

Norma: Oh, would you look at that! Fancy meeting you here!
Will: Oh, please.
Chloe: I thought we told you not to come with us.
Jay: Nice to see you again, Alliance marine.
Senel: What are you up to this time?
Will: You two know each other?
Senel: Thanks to him, I wound up having to fight the Bouncers. Will, be careful. He's probably working on some scheme right now.
Will: Just who are you?
Jay: Say, Alliance marines are pretty good with boats, right?
Senel: And what if they are?
Jay: I'm not half bad, myself. I get anxious when another person and I are good at the same things. I always feel I simply must find out which one is truly better. Don't you?
Jay: You and I are going to have a little race. Think you can keep up?

I. Yes. Even with godmode information dealer abilities, I don't see how he could have anticipated Senel coming on the scene, so this has to be spur of the moment, a combination of genuine curiosity and competitiveness with a heavy dose of "do I have a compelling reason NOT to be an obnoxious douchebag? fuck no, I don't."

They proceed to race. Will is not happy about this.

Jay: He's doing pretty well with that boat. That's an Alliance marine for you!
Will: Don't drag us into your stupid games! Stop this at once!
Jay: What happened to the woman who was with you?
Will: Chloe is in the cabin. She isn't feeling well.
Jay: But this feels so good! What a shame.
Will: I told you to stop this!
Jay: We're about to speed up. You'd better hold on tight.
Senel: You're not getting away!
Jay: Ah!
Norma: All right, we're neck-and-neck!
Jay: This isn't over yet!

Senel, as before, is pretty skilled, but the engine of his boat gives out a little after that, and he falls behind thereafter. They make it to the other end of Raging Bay without further incident. What a disappointment.

WHAT HE LEARNS
+ details about information dealer business back home!
+ more stuff about the situation with Vaclav
+ I could race boats . . . .
+ Was pretty competitive! Not that he didn't know this already.
+ gosh I sure was a dick to these people I now love

EFFECTS

oh geez.

So there's a little bit of "wth, past self" going on here what with the dicking around with people he currently considers friends, but he doesn't feel nearly as much of an :/-slash-disconnect as with his last memory. No harm was done, after all. It was funny! And he learned something new about Senel. :') It dovetails nicely with the conclusion he's coming to about this kind of approach in Aather: despite his newfound reservations about it, sometimes the persona is amusing and/or useful. Maybe it won't get him what he wants so badly, but he's loathe to give up trolling altogether.

"Jay the Unseen" is (this is interpretation, but NYEH) a deliberately constructed persona, albeit one that reflects the most childish impulses of Jay's own nature--it's got some similarities to the pushy thing Swift does sometimes, but carried out on a much greater and more concerted scale. This is a good study of the ways in which it serves a practical purpose. The only thing is that it kind of relies on being able to disappear afterward, something which isn't actually possible in Aather. And he knows that. There are all kinds of social consequences here; he's already run into a few of them. People would also probably not take kindly to someone who started charging for useful information! That's okay, Jay can adapt '-'

god I don't write this much about some memories that are actually important. This was also +5 to maskiness! which will be applied in situations that call for it.
